Conversations of Performance Management

The Office of Human Resources Conversations of Performance Management curriculum is an online program intended to provide you with the tools and resources to engage in thoughtful and rewarding performance conversations. These resources focus on the four critical conversations managers and employees should be having throughout the year:

  • Plan
  • Develop
  • Feedback
  • Review

Critical Thinking Skills

Increasing your critical thinking skills can help you in decision making, problem solving, creativity and planning. In this 25-minute online course, you’ll learn the key characteristics of critical thinking and how to implement a critical thinking process in your work. You will also learn how to avoid critical thinking mistakes, identify assumptions and biases, evaluate information, and distinguish between fact and opinion.

Discover Your Personal Leadership Brand

Learn why creating a professional brand is important, and how to create a brand that goes beyond your strengths, skills and character to convey your leadership ability. This 2-hour instructor-led interactive workshop includes reflection on your personal presence, how you use your strengths in your role, how you engage others, and your outcomes and results. Participants bring this information together on a Leadership Brand Worksheet and receive suggestions on how to continue their branding effort after the workshop.

A Glimpse into Emotional Intelligence

This curriculum contains 4 online courses.  To complete the curriculum successfully, you must complete all four courses.  There is a suggested but not required sequence to the courses:

  • An Introduction to Emotional Intelligence – Part 1 of 4
  • Emotional Intelligence: Self-Awareness – Part 2 of 4
  • Emotional Intelligence: Self-Management – Part 3 of 4
  • Emotional Intelligence: Social Skills and Empathy – Part 4 of 4

Feedback Skills

Managers, do feedback conversations sometimes feel scary? Take the fear out of feedback during this 2-hour instructor-led workshop. You’ll learn to deliver feedback with greater confidence and success and you’ll leave the workshop with a set of feedback skills you can apply right away.

How to Boost Your Value at Work

When you think of someone who is invaluable, what do you think of? Indispensable people are found in many different roles and settings, yet they share common characteristics. In this 25-minute online course, you’ll learn how to thrive under pressure and expand your career opportunities by taking initiative, effectively resolving problems, sharing your knowledge, and being an overall positive influence in the workplace.

Reframe and Renew

This 90-minute instructor-led workshop introduces techniques to reframe thoughts, situations, and challenging relationships in a more positive or beneficial way. This refreshing and interactive session is full of tools and examples to help you look at things from new perspectives.

Starting Strong Cohort Experience for New Managers

This 4-day in person program provides managers who are new or new to Ohio State (1 year or less in their role) with foundational skills and clear expectations for their role and mindset as a manager.

Starting Strong develops managers who:

  • Understand the crucial link between building positive, inclusive relationships and team effectiveness and engagement
  • Have a growth mindset – embrace challenge and learning and cultivate this mindset in others
  • Lead with confidence, transparency, and resilience
  • Build a network of seasoned managers and peers across campus, reducing silos

Special features of Starting Strong:

  • Skilled facilitators who are experts on their topic and attuned to the challenges of new managers
  • DISC Behavioral Style Assessment to increase awareness of your style and other styles
  • Starting Strong Connect community in BuckeyeLearn to access workshop materials and exchange ideas
  • Reflection and deliberate practice of skills
  • Pre-work to deepen understanding and allow more in-class discussion (1 hour or less per week)

Participants are required to attend all 4 days of this cohort-based program. If you cannot commit to all 4 days for a cohort, please register for a different cohort.

Supervising Student Employees

This 2-hour instructor-led workshop covers foundational principles of supervision through the lens of college student employment. Through learning evidence-based practices, and sharing challenges and strategies with others, participants will walk away with practical solutions for supervising students in their own context. Learn to set a reasonable yet challenging expectation, offer effective feedback and more.

Supervising Student Employees is provided in partnership with the Office of Student Life and the Office of Human Resources.

The Art of Influencing Others

This online course helps you understand the nature of influence and persuasion and gives you tools to increase your influence. By learning the art of influence, you can change people’s minds, win their support, or broaden their perspective without resentment. Influence is not manipulation, bribing or forcing people to your point of view – influence is opening people’s minds to your way of thinking.

Working Through Difficult Conversations

Do you sometimes avoid difficult or challenging conversations? Is it hard to decide where to start? Do you have the same conversation more than once with the same person?
This 3-hour instructor-led workshop provides tools and practice to help you increase your skill and comfort in engaging in difficult conversations.  Learn how to prepare in advance, start the conversation effectively, and maintain a productive environment. We will also discuss handling conversations that become difficult at the moment.
